Anti-Aging & Skin Care: Shaving Face is Saving Face

No woman wants a mustache. Or those weird chin hairs that magically appear one day with no warning. We all know about waxing, tweezing, bleaching and depilatories.

And now in addition to electrolysis we have lasers that are very effective for removing unwanted hair not only on the face but other areas of the body as well.

Now, what would you think if I told you that dermatologists and estheticians have been recommending shaving as a real alternative to the methods of hair removal for the face? I’m an esthetician and I hadn’t heard about it! But I haven’t been working in a salon or medical spa since 2003. Read the rest of this entry »

Anti-Aging and New Uses For Botox

If you’re into anti-aging you have most certainly heard of Botox. And even if you aren’t you’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard at least something about it.

Botox use, as we know it so far in the cosmetic and anti-aging world, is used to eliminate those furrows between your eyebrows.

But, hold onto your hat. There are new and interesting uses being employed. Whether you are brave enough to actually try any of them may be another story, but they are interesting!

How about lifting your breasts? And the result being close to an actual surgical lift? Don’t like the shape of your nose? Well, guess what. Now you can change it with a Botox loaded pin prick of a tiny needle.

How about your smile? Seeing too much of the upper teeth and gums? Fix that, too. And what about the shape of your eyes? Just can’t achieve that wide set, doe-eyed look you’re after with liner and shadow? Another little stick of the Botox needle can produce that as well.

Any of this interest you? Are you brave enough? All of these treatments are fairly new. So finding a doctor who has the experience to do the best job may not be an easy task. And having that experience is key.

Emu Oil: Anti-Aging & Other Benefits

Emu Oil. To me its, ewww (Ewwwmu Oil)! Yeah, I know Oprah uses it, or at least says she does. But honestly, I just am not all that excited about smearing rendered bird fat on my face and body. Not because I am a vegan, or even a vegetarian. And yes, I love animals. But not scorpions. One stung me last night. And yes, loving animals and eating animals, whole ‘nother issue for someone else’s blog. But I digress…

Granted, emu oil is great for the skin. Or so they say. And who are “they”, anyway? Mostly those who are manufacturing and selling emu oil would be my guess. Yet I did find information sighting a number of benefits to be had from the use of emu oil. And not just from an anti-aging view point. Read the rest of this entry »

Acne Scars and Scotch Tape?

Looking around the net at anti-aging sites and forums I found this bit about using scotch tape on red marks left behind by acne and the occasional breakout. Wow, never heard that one before. Have you?

Strangely enough, people claim that using a piece of regular old scotch tape on a remaining red spot will fade or remove it.  Over time of course. I haven’t tried it myself since I don’t have any red marks, at least right now….

This is done on a freshly washed and dried face. Don’t put any treatments or moisturizer on before you apply the tape. You apply the tape and then remove it immediately. So it is a bit like a peeling exfoliate. At least that is the way I understood it. Read the rest of this entry »

Adult Acne: Not Fair!

I know what you are thinking, acne and wrinkles, so not fair. And you are absolutely right. It isn’t. I know about that first hand. See it happened to me. I never had a break out problem as a teen and sailed right through my 20′s and 30′s with clear skin.

Then came my 40′s.  A few wrinkles, nothing to shout about. Then a very stressful move across the country. Suddenly I was dealing with Adult Onset Cystic Acne. Ewww.  And being an esthetician, need I tell you I was absolutely mortified?

So off I went to the dermatologist. We tried every topical prescription available. We tried nearly every oral medication indicated for acne. And nothing worked.

My acne was not horrible. I have seen much worse cases. But it was certainly enough to make me miserable. There was one remedy we had not tried because I really didn’t want to go there. I had heard the horror stories of Accutane.

I bit the bullet and took it. Turned out that it was too strong for my system so I took a half dose for a longer period of time. My skin became so dry and so sensitive it was nearly unbearable. And not just on my face, everywhere. Read the rest of this entry »
