Aging and Wrinkles from Extrinsic Causes!

In another post I told you  about how wrinkles are formed. About  the internal biological stuff that causes wrinkles over time, the intrinsic factors. But there are also a number of factors that are related to lifestyle and personal habits that contribute to wrinkles and just how soon you start seeing those wrinkles appear. These are extrinsic reasons for aging of the skin. And they are how we get those free radicals roaming around in our systems, like little “pac men” messing with all our healthy cells!! I really think the media itself has properly covered this. Articles in magazines and news show segments are always telling us what not to do!

But I am going to give you a little run down as a reminder. Because changing some of your wrinkle inducing habits could make a big difference. And help your skin care products do their job giving you a complexion nothing short of gorgeous!

Okay, Here we go!

__need_a_smoke__#1: Do not smoke. Smoking is one of two of the biggest wrinkle inducing habits. And it isn???t just the toxins and restricted oxygen and blood flow that are the problem. The actual physical motion of pursing the lips to take a puff, well , where do you think those vertical lip lines come from? You will also earn the experience early degradation of collagen and elastin if you smoke. Read the rest of this entry »

How Wrinkles Are Formed, Like It or Not!

Living_by_H_J_PhotographyWell, I don’t like it. Do you? I thought not. Unfortunately wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. And many things contribute to it. Lifestyle, the habits you have, or don’t have are a factor. Family genetics are another.

So what goes on in the skin as we age that causes those wrinkles to appear? Remember those fibroblasts I mentioned a couple times in other posts? Those factories of the skin that produce collagen, elastin and GAG’s (glycosaminoglycans, such a BIG word). These fibroblasts start slowing production over time. This is because of the natural aging process and from outside influences. The loss of collagen, elastin and GAG’s cause the skin to wrinkle and fold in on itself. Yuck. Read the rest of this entry »

Facials with Gold, Bird Poo, Noodles and Snakes?

Gold FacialsI don’t get it. Really, I don’t. I am totally into Wrinkle Reducing Skin Care, but puuuhleez, what is going on here? As an Esthetician I have performed a variety of different types of facials. And I’ve always believed and still do believe in  science based anti-aging skin care.

I began today thinking I would take a look at a new trend in facials that I personally find rather questionable. Gold Facials. This is a facial I have never performed. It is something that has become popular recently, claiming to assist in lymphatic drainage, removal of toxins, the regeneration of cells and improvement of elasticity and smoothness in the skin. All of these things are good. This is based on Ayurvedic, an ancient health regime of India. Read the rest of this entry »

The Oxygen Facial – What’s Up With That?

oxygen__by_ryussei23Well, I’m not sure exactly… What I am not sure about is why anyone would pay so much money for something that has no medical or clinical studies, 3rd party clinical studies being the only truly reliable source of unbiased facts. No proof that the Oxygen Facial stimulates collagen or elastin production.

And golly, let’s see. If I remember correctly, oxygen produces oxidation, which is damage. That’s true. Umm, isn’t that what makes a slice of apple turn brown? Another form of oxidation is rust, uh hello? That’s damage, too. Apple_by_Snowman_kunOxygen is full of free radicals, so why would anyone want to push that into their skin just to obtain very temporary plumping of wrinkles? Our skin doesn’t need oxygen pushed into it. In fact it could be damaging. Our internal organs need oxygen and we BREATH that in. And, yes free radicals come with it. Which is why we are encouraged to eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants to combat that. Read the rest of this entry »
