Anti-Aging Skin Care Treatment: Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an anti-aging and restorative skin care procedure being used by many women. There are good candidates for this treatment and some who should stay way clear of it. In general, this is a great tool for treating aging skin, dark and unwanted pigmentation, acne scarring, blackheads, fine lines or wrinkles, and thickened or dull skin. It is also useful in reducing the appearance of enlarged pores.

Women who have any of the following issues should not consider Microdermabrasion. Rosacea, active acne, dermatitis, any type of lesion, eczema or psoriasis, cold sores, hepatitis, active diabetes, broken or fragile capillaries, and anyone taking prescription blood thinners. Anyone who has taken the drug Accutane should wait 6-12 months before having treatment. Your skin is in a highly sensitive state after the use of Accutane. If you are pregnant or nursing Microdermabrasion should be avoided. And if you are 14 years of age or younger. These last two issues are hormone related, you could end up with permanent discoloration.

OK, so now we have that out of the way. Are you a candidate? Read the rest of this entry »

Cornelia, NYYou know! You go to a spa, excited to have a relaxing and rejuvenating facial treatment. Something go OUCH? Read the rest of this entry »

Facials with Gold, Bird Poo, Noodles and Snakes?

Gold FacialsI don’t get it. Really, I don’t. I am totally into skin care, but puuuhleez, what is going on here? As an Esthetician I have performed a variety of different types of facials. And I’ve always believed and still do believe in science based anti-aging skin care.

I began today thinking I would take a look at a new trend in facials that I personally find rather questionable. Gold Facials. This is a facial I have never performed. It is something that has become popular recently, claiming to assist in lymphatic drainage, removal of toxins, the regeneration of cells and improvement of elasticity and smoothness in the skin. All of these things are good. This is based on Ayurvedic, an ancient health regime of India. Read the rest of this entry »

The Oxygen Facial – What’s Up With That?

oxygen__by_ryussei23Well, I’m not sure exactly… What I am not sure about is why anyone would pay so much money for something that has no medical or clinical studies. No source of unbiased facts. No proof that the Oxygen Facial stimulates collagen or elastin production.

And golly, let’s see. If I remember correctly, oxygen produces oxidation, which is damage. That’s true. Umm, isn’t that what makes a slice of apple turn brown? Another form of oxidation is rust, uh hello? That’s damage, too. Apple_by_Snowman_kunOxygen is full of free radicals, so why would anyone want to push that into their skin just to obtain very temporary plumping of wrinkles? Our skin doesn’t need oxygen pushed into it. My point, and I do have one, is; our skin already gets all the oxygen it needsĀ  and forcing oxygen into the skin from the outside is potentially damaging. Our internal organs need oxygen and we breathe that in. Our breathing oxygenates the skin. And, yes free radicals come with it. Which is why we are encouraged to eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants to combat that. Read the rest of this entry »

Facials – Some Really Good Advice

003_by_fantabuliciousEver go to a spa for a facial and end up confused as to what may or may not be best for your skin? Many spas are offering long menus these days full of exotic treatments. What’s a gimmick and what isn’t may be very difficult for the average gal to figure out!

I found this great little article on WebMD. This should help you a bit when navigating that spa menu. And guess what? They do mention my personal favorite. Galvanic!

I will have a post up shortly going into more detail on that. It happens to be one of the best ways to get those cell communicating ingredients deep into the skin while stimulating collagen production and smoothing wrinkles, sags and bags!

Anyway, like I said, more on that later! For now, enjoy this article. Read the rest of this entry »
