Anti-Aging, Tanning Salons and Skin Cancer
Do you “go tanning”? You know, go to a tanning salon and lay in one of those beds or stand in the booth? Come on, you know who you are. You still think that a tan is a sign of good health; perhaps you even think it makes you look younger. That is what I hear people that use the awful things say.
Maybe you only use a tanning bed when you are preparing to take a vacation in a tropical location where you will have increased sun exposure. More than you are getting now if it is winter and you are in a cold climate. You think building up a ‘base tan’ will protect you from that first day sunburn? Really think so? Let’s get real. Acne Scarring – A Solution?
Recently I met a young woman via the web that expressed great concern about acne scarring. I know personally how devastating acne can be emotionally, as I had a short lived run in with the dreaded stuff myself. Mine was what they refer to as Adult Acne, and responded well to a short term treatment plan. And I was fortunate not to have any scarring at all. But I know that if I had I would not be happy. So I felt compelled to try and find an answer for this young woman.
So I consulted with a few skin care contacts as to what product or tool is most effective in the minimizing of acne scarring. Microdermabrasion came up, as I expected. I knew this was a first line of treatment. Minimally invasive but expensive over the long run. Very invasive and very expensive, but very effective is a medical laser procedure. Laser requires a long down time for healing which can be inconvenient. And it is a cosmetic procedure not covered by medical insurance. Chemical peels work, less down time than laser but again, can be quite costly.
I was looking for something that is affordable. The home version kits for microdermabrasion are an option, but they are considerably less powerful and effective when compared to a professional treatment. I wanted something that was going to really deliver for this young woman. Read the rest of this entry »
Wrinkles and Argireline – “Better than Botox”?
If you are looking around at products that are meant to replace those expensive Botox injections, you have more than likely run across ads claiming this: “Better than Botox”. Right? I know I’ve seen plenty of them.
The ingredient that they are claiming is better than Botox is Argireline, or Acetyl Hexapeptide-3. This ingredient is a synthetically derived protein. Companies using this ingredient are claiming that it has muscle relaxing abilities. This ingredient is being put into products that are meant to be applied to the entire face. Now maybe I haven’t heard right, but isn’t Botox meant only for the brow and forehead area? And isn’t Botox a muscle movement minimizer, in other words muscle paralyzing?
Let me ask you this: Supposing that this ingredient works as well as the manufacturer claims and does relax the muscles of your face, is relaxing every muscle in your face something you really want? Doesn’t it make sense that if you were applying this on the entire surface of your face that the muscles of the face would all relax and you’d end up with sagging skin? Of course you would notice that, wouldn’t you? Are you using it? On your entire face? Is your face sagging? No? Then maybe it isn’t really doing anything at all. Read the rest of this entry »
Aging and Wrinkles from Extrinsic Causes
In another post I told you about how wrinkles are formed. About the internal biological stuff that causes wrinkles over time, the intrinsic factors. But there are also a number of factors that are related to lifestyle and personal habits that contribute to wrinkles, and just how soon you start seeing those wrinkles appear. These are extrinsic reasons for aging of the skin. And they are how we get those free radicals roaming around in our systems, like little “pac men” messing with all our healthy cells!! I really think the media itself has properly covered this. Articles in magazines and news show segments are always telling us what not to do!
But I am going to give you a little run down as a reminder. Because changing some of your wrinkle inducing habits could make a big difference. And help your skin care products do their job giving you a complexion nothing short of gorgeous!
Okay, Here we go!
#1: Do not smoke. Smoking is one of two of the biggest wrinkle inducing habits. And it isn’t just the toxins and restricted oxygen and blood flow that are the problem. The actual physical motion of pursing the lips to take a puff, well , where do you think those vertical lip lines come from? You will also earn the experience early degradation of collagen and elastin if you smoke. Read the rest of this entry »
How Wrinkles Are Formed, Like It or Not…
Well, I don’t like it. Do you? I thought not. Unfortunately wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. And many things contribute to it. Lifestyle, the habits you have, or don’t have are a factor. Family genetics are another.
So what goes on in the skin as we age that causes those wrinkles to appear? Remember those fibroblasts I mentioned a couple times in other posts? Those factories of the skin that produce collagen, elastin and GAG’s (glycosaminoglycans, such a BIG word). These fibroblasts start slowing production over time. This is because of the natural aging process and from outside influences. The loss of collagen, elastin and GAG’s cause the skin to wrinkle and fold in on itself. Yuck. Read the rest of this entry »
